Skiing At Home again

This winter has been awesome for skiing at home on my homemade rope tow. The only problem over the last month as been, well...it is frozen!

We had freezing rain and sleet about a month ago and I failed to make it out and pull the rope off of the ground. That spelled a solid block of snow/ice buried 15 inches deep. Here is a video of the fun around January.

Skiing at Home With Rope Tow

Today was the first official day of skiing on our farm, what a blast it was. Snow was good and coverage was great. Plus hopefully overnight the wind will continue to blow and drift the snow in my tracks.

Big Snow for Southeast?

According to the latest NAM forecast model, some SE ski resorts could see 12+ inches of snow!

Talk about an epic day on the snow! Forecasters are saying a few things still need to come together for this to unfold, but it appears the the latest models are coming into agreement that at least the mountains will get snow.

Weekend Snow Melting This Week

After receiving 3-8 inches of snow, most ski resorts in the southeast will see the natural stuff disappear and the wet granular snow make a return this week. However, the coldest air of the season is predicted for the end of this week, bringing excellent snowmaking conditions. If you decided to head out Tuesday or Wednesday, bring the rain gear!

Here's a shot of my son enjoying the snow this past weekend in our front yard. By the way, Winterplace Ski Resort plans on opening this weekend.

Snow

It snowed last night in my yard in southwest Virginia! Not very much, but I had a dusting of snow in my yard. Most resorts in the southeast received at least a dusting of snow. This morning, Snowshoe, WV is reporting 1 inch of natural snow.

Cold air is in the forecast this weekend and snow is even possible. Some forecasters are calling for several inches. Keep thinking snow.

Sugar Mountain Trip Report

On Saturday November 28, 2009, I decided to head to NC to ski at Sugar Mountain. Sugar Mountain is located just outside of Banner Elk, NC and they were the only resort other than Cataloochee Ski Resort open in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

The snow coverage was really good considering that everything was bare 48 hours ago. Even though there was some mud, it was still great just to be on the snow again!

thanks to these things, we can ski

base was very low, but I never hit a rock or much mud on the slope at all, only real mud was on loading and unloading

A few thin spots

but I did wear the "rock skis" just in case

glad I wore the rock skis now

sweet!!!

My first trip to Sugar Mtn. was great! I had a great time and give huge props to them for opening so early with so little snow!
